What it's like using an exchange with a built-in social trading feed

Thought I would write up how I have got on since signing up to an exchange that has a social network attached. I have used a few platforms before, but this was the first where you can talk to other traders directly, see what they are doing, and copy their trades if you feel like it.

I was sceptical about the social part at first - it sounded like a gimmick - but it has turned out to be genuinely useful. There is a public feed where people post trades, strategies and general market thinking. I have found a couple of people who are honest about their losses as well as their wins, and following their reasoning has helped me understand why they do what they do. It beats staring at charts alone.

The copy trading is interesting. I tried it with small amounts, following two people who explain their trades properly. Nobody got rich, but I picked up a great deal about managing risk and about how differently two people can read one market. Copying somebody blindly is obviously risky, so I go through their record and their reasoning before any money moves.

The best part is being able to ask a question and get an answer from someone actually in the market, rather than an influencer shouting about the next moonshot. There is a real community feel, and it is easier to stay with it when you can see other people learning out loud too.

On the whole the social side makes it more interactive and more educational. It is not perfect - there is still plenty of noise and hype - but filter that out and there are people worth listening to. If you are tired of trading in isolation, a platform like this is worth a look.

The part of this I agree with completely: following someone who explains their
reasoning teaches you more than any chart you stare at alone, and people who
post their losses are worth ten who post only screenshots of wins.

Where I would push back is on "go through their record" being a thing you can
actually do on those feeds. The record the exchange shows you is a rolling
30-day window. That is not a shortcoming of one platform, it is how nearly all
of them publish. So a trader who wiped an account in June and traded calmly
through July has a July profile, and nothing in the interface tells you June
happened.

We archive daily curves ourselves for that reason, and the numbers we have
collected so far are not comforting: out of 1,509 copy traders tracked, 150
have had a deposit reset since we began watching and 360 have fallen 70% or
more from their peak. Those are the ones we caught in the window we have. The
ones before it are gone for everybody.

I say this as someone who spent years trading other people's calls with bots.
The reasoning in the feed sounded good, the calls sounded good, and my money
went down anyway. Reading someone's thinking tells you whether they are honest
and whether you understand them. It does not tell you what their account did.
Those are two different questions, and the second one needs data neither of you
can see in a 30-day window.
