What does "Fresh Start" mean on ChainRated?

A Fresh Start is a deposit reset: the day a copy trader's account cycle is zeroed and a new one begins — usually after the deposit was wiped out, sometimes because the trader closed everything and restarted deliberately.

It matters because the headline numbers survive it. ROI is measured over a window that starts after the reset, and the loss that caused it sits outside the measurement. A profile can show a healthy 30-day ROI a week after the account went to zero.

What we do about it: we archive each trader's daily equity curve ourselves, every day. A reset leaves an unmistakable mark in that archive — the per-cycle accumulators that drift a little every trading day suddenly land on exactly zero overnight. When that happens after a cycle with real money in it, we record the date, show it on the trader's profile, and cap the Life Score (one reset caps it at 3.5, two or more at 1.5).

One honest limitation: we can only count resets that happen while we are watching. The exchange publishes a rolling 30-day window, so resets from before we started archiving a trader are not visible to anyone — including us. Every trader's counter starts at zero and grows only from real observations.

More on the metric: How to read Life Score.

Adding the part that made us build this in the first place.

A reset is not a rare accident at the edge of the data. Of the 1,509 copy
traders we archive, 150 have had at least one deposit reset since we started
watching them, and 360 have fallen 70% or more from their own peak. Those are
only the ones that happened while we were looking. The exchange window is 30
days, so a reset from last spring is not in anyone's data, including ours.

What it looks like from the follower's side is the part worth knowing. Nothing
on the profile shouts. The trader stops appearing in the copy list for a while,
comes back with a clean 30-day window, and the number you see a week later is
computed entirely from the days after the account went to zero. The losing
month is not hidden by anybody — it simply aged out of the window everyone
reads from.

I know that mechanic from the wrong side. Before this site existed I ran bots
that traded other people's calls with my own money, and my worst account did
exactly this: it went to nothing and then produced a perfectly respectable
month straight afterwards. If someone had been reading my numbers that week
they would have seen a good trader.

So the counter on a profile is not there to shame anyone. It is there because
the number next to it is measured after the reset, and you deserve to know
where the measurement starts.
